Featured Class: High School Sailing
High school sailing at Sheridan Shore is advanced. The school hosts four high schools: Loyola Academy, Beacon Academy, Evanston Township HS, and Glenbrook South. Because of the nature of our practices, the teams typically grow intertwined into a familiar and friendly competition. Every practice is tailored to individually target the strengths and weaknesses of every sailor pair and emphasize them so that each team can grow together and reach their full potential. They work to broaden the frame of reference they have, and base of knowledge to work with, both in practice and in regattas. We have two seasons—one in the fall, and one in the spring. Sailors typically keep up relationships and team activities in the offseason to retain knowledge to come back full throttle. Over the summer, many high school sailors can be found on the race team, honing their skill sets and developing awkward tan lines.
Evanston Caption's Review
By Mary Castellini
The Evanston Township High School Sailing Team persisted through the pandemic and made it out onto Lake Michigan every week for the Fall 2020 season. Ensuring a COVID safe environment, teammates sailed with the same partner throughout the season all while wearing masks and practicing social distancing on the dock. Keeping the same partner allowed Sheridan Shore to initiate an ongoing season championship, where sailors competed weekly in Saturday varsity and Sunday JV races. The Evanston Team also participated in weekend clinics to enhance skills and refine racing techniques. We are all looking forward to getting back on the water, right when the ice breaks, for our 2021 Spring season!
